Integrating with Third-Party Products

In order to output BarVision's real-time data stream into third-party applications running on a computer, you will need to purchase our customized RS485-to-USB Adapter. The adapter comes complete with drivers for most operatng systems including Windows, Mac, and Linux. Contact your BarVision sales representative for more information.

Exporting to Windows®

Using the BarVision Conduit for Palm® HotSync software, you can export BarVision journal files and reports from the handheld and archive them on a Windows®-based PC. From the PC, reports can be printed to any Windows®-compatible printer using a text editor such as Notepad. Journal files can be used in spreadsheets, databases, and reporting applications such as Crystal Reports®. Learn more about installing and using the conduit in the BarVision User's Guide.

The BarVision Conduit is subject to the requirements of Palm® Desktop for Windows.

Handheld Printing Requirements

To print BarVision reports directly from a Palm handheld, avoid using GDI printers, commonly referred to as winprinters. GDI printers require proprietary Windows®-based software to generate a printable page. Printers that support multiple platforms (Mac®, Linux) in addition to Windows® are good candidates for direct handheld printing.

To print BarVision reports directly from a Palm handheld using IrDA (infrared):

  1. Printer with built-in IrDA connectivity - Make sure to select a printer that supports your handheld without requiring additional software.
  2. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following printer as a reference solution:

    — HP 450

NOTE: We do not currently support the Canon Pixma iP90 printer due to font and page formatting issues.

OR

  1. IrDA printer adapter - In order for the printer to communicate with the handheld, you will need an IrDA printer adapter such as the IR100 series (IR100M, IR100M+, IR100MP) from ACTiSYS.
  2. Compatible printer - Make sure to select a printer that is compatible with the IrDA adapter.
  3. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following reference solutions:

    ACTiSYS IR100M adapter connected to...
    — Brother HL-2070N
    — Dell S2500
    — HP LaserJet 5000
    — Lexmark E240

To print BarVision reports directly from a Palm handheld using Bluetooth:

  1. Printer with built-in Bluetooth connectivity - Make sure to select a printer that supports your handheld without requiring additional software.
  2. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following printer as a reference solution:

    — HP 460wbt*

*Due to the memory constraints of the HP Bluetooth printer card, we only recommend using this print solution for low volume (approx 15 pages) reporting such as bartenders' end-of-shift summaries or BarVision demonstrations.

OR

  1. Bluetooth printer adapter - In order for the printer to communicate with the handheld, you will need an external Bluetooth printer adapter such as the D-Link DBT-320.
  2. Compatible printer - Select a non-GDI printer that is compliant with the requirements of the selected Bluetooth adapter.
  3. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following reference solutions:

    D-Link DBT-320 adapter connected to...
    — Brother HL-2070N printer
    — Lexmark E240 printer

To print BarVision reports directly from a Palm handheld to a stand-alone printer using Wi-Fi:

  1. Wireless print server - You will need a Wi-Fi 802.11b/g wireless print server that supports LPR printing such as the D-Link DP-G301. If you select an 802.11g print sever, make sure to enable b/g mixed-mode communications in order to support Palm handhelds.
  2. Compatible printer - Any non-GDI printer that is compliant with the print server should work with BarVision.
  3. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following reference solutions:

D-Link DP-G301 print server connected to...
    — Brother HL-2070N
    — Dell S2500
    — HP LaserJet 5000
    — Lexmark E240

To print BarVision reports directly from a Palm handheld to a network printer using Wi-Fi:

  1. Wireless network access - The network must include a WLAN switch, router, or access point that supports Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless clients.
  2. Printer with built-in print server - You will need a printer that supports LPR printing.
  3. As part of our in-house testing, we have confirmed the following reference printers:

    — Brother HL-2070N
